Design coordination work subcontracted for UVATERV Zrt.

Subject of contribution: Design Coordination works of 3 new buildings – Hangar building, Office building, Workshop and Storage building –
supported by multi-round clash detection process.

Architectural plans of each building were developed in Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD application intensively using its 3D modeling capabilities.
The large-span steel structure of Hangar building was initially developed also in 3D model using Autodesk’s Construction Detailer application.
In case of one building the ArchiCAD model was extended to serve generation of 2D formworking and structural assembly plans. This
means that all cast-in-place and prefabricated concrete elements – columns, beams, floors, floor panels, walls, stairs – contained the
required MEP holes and the all steel assemblies should be placed before concrete pouring.





Electrical, mechanical and technological plans of the numerous MEP sub-disciplines were basically developed as 2D drawings and so must be
3D modelled by the Coordinator’s staff. This was made by using Autodesk’s Revit 2015 application based on the size/height/elevation
annotations on 2D drawings and on 2D section drawings provided by the original designers.

 Architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical model parts have been combined into a single integrated coordination model in
Autodesk’s NavisWorks 2015 application. Clash detection module of this application performed the necessary collision investigation
but this application were used as main revision and solution finder tool as well.





Specialty of this project that – beside the original ArchiCAD model used in Navisworks – some architectural (or rather structural) elements
were duplicated in a „Revit Architectural Model” in order to play as „host” element of wall- and ceiling-hosted mechanical and electrical
fixtures. This – apparently extra – work provided additional advantages, like:

  • Grid of this Revit architectural model provided a unified common Grid to facilitate positioning of 3D model components coming from other applications

  • enjoying the advantage of Revit-origin Grids in Navisworks it was easy to Group all detected collisions

  • in case of (frequent) design modifications – e.g. when lifting or lowering a false ceiling elements – moving of all „hosted” components (fixtures) has happened automatically

  • by linking together the (otherwise separate) architectural, electrical and mechanical model in Revit we have gained a sufficiently complete 3D Coordination Model already in Revit, in which we could set (generate) 30-40 coordination Section drawings per buildings. During design modification rounds these Section drawings were used as vector (DWG) format coordination drawings by designers.
